What’s behind the deadly violence in South Africa

On 16 September Professor Loren Landau published this opinion piece in the New York Times. Landau argues that the xenophobic violence is not irrational violence or a spontaneous popular revolt. Nor is it simply “criminality,” as South Africa’s political leaders repeatedly claim. Rather, it is an act rooted in the failures of South Africa’s transformation.
