Anti-migrant protests have continued for months, with another deadline set for 30 September. Thousands of foreign workers already left earlier this year after anti-immigrant groups issued an ultimatum. As protests turn violent, the question remains: how will the government respond?

Professor Jo Vearey (Associate Professor and Co-Director, African Centre for Migration & Society, Wits University) joined Al Jazeera’s Inside Story to unpack the crisis:

“What we are seeing, the violence that has manifested; is driven by political agendas. These vigilante groups such as March and March and Operation Dudula are using the frustrations to push their own agendas.”
