Looking at the capacity of the state, can President Ramaphosa uphold the recent measures outlined around migration?
Professor Jo Vearey (African Centre for Migration & Society) shares her perspective: “The way in which they will be achieved is lacking and unclear. Calling citizens to uphold the law is important, but enforcement may be a challenge.”
She also notes that it would have been helpful for the president to acknowledge the challenges experienced at a local level, where the real pressures of migration governance play out daily.
