When two-time Grammy-winning artist Tyla announced the African leg of her APOP world tour, Lagos was among the stops. Nigerian excitement quickly turned into calls for a boycott, because Tyla is South African. For some Nigerians, artists from a country where xenophobic violence has shaken major cities shouldn’t be welcome.
Professor Loren Landau SARChI in Mobility and the Politics of Difference, ACMS) captures the tension: “South Africa is caught between two opposing visions wherein one deeply connected with the rest of the continent, and another of an isolationist nature that reinforces divisions and attitudes inherited from the colonial era towards other Africans.”
