PODCAST: Ramaphosa Warns Against Xenophobia as Violence Against Foreign Nationals Rises

Jun 10, 2026

President Ramaphosa has warned against xenophobia as violence against foreign nationals continues to rise. But is condemnation enough?

Professor Loren Landau (African Centre for Migration & Society) shared his perspective on PowerFM:

“It is important for South Africa to have these conversations on xenophobia and migration. These conversations have moved from townships to the heads of government. It is good that the president has spoken against xenophobia, however it is akin to giving a taxi driver a fine, it may not change the behaviour.”

His warning comes as many political parties mobilise support ahead of the upcoming local government elections, often using anti-migrant rhetoric to consolidate votes.
