Dr Soorej Jose Puthoopparambil is a senior lecturer in global health and migration and programme director for the master’s programme in Global Heath at the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health at Uppsala University, Sweden. He is also head of the WHO Collaborating Center on Migration and Health Data and Evidence. He has led the development of several global evidence reviews, such as the first WHO regional report on the health of refugees and migrants in the WHO European region and the first WHO global report on refugee and migrant health. He has also authored international guidance on topics such as the integration of refugee and migrant data into national health information systems and health in immigration detention. In addition to teaching migration, global health, and public health in humanitarian action, his current research focuses on health in immigration detention centers, voluntary and forced return migration, health communication during crises, and healthcare access and utilisation among forced migrants and host communities in displacement settings. Soorej is the EU lead for European Union (EU)- African Union (AU) Cluster of Research Excellence (CoRE) on migration and health. His previous assignments include overseeing the research and evidence generation agenda of the Migration and Health Programme at the WHO Regional Office for Europe, and working with IOM to conduct country assessments. He continues to provide technical support for WHO and other national and international agencies on questions related to migration and health.
