Adetola Oyenubi

PhD

Adetola Oyenubi is a doctoral candidate at the ACMS and a fellow at the pioneering Wits Doctoral Academy. Her research explores the intersections of caregiving responsibilities and experiences of well-being among internally displaced persons in Plateau State, Nigeria.

With a background in journalism, Adetola brings a creative lens to her research, using ethnographic and art-based methodologies to engage participants and capture their lived realities in ways that go beyond traditional academic methods. Her work is deeply personal, shaped by her own experiences of ethno-religious conflict in Plateau State, Nigeria. She is a DAAD-funded scholar and previously worked as a Research Assistant on the GEMMS project, focusing on gendered violence among migrants in precarious situations and its impacts on their mental health. Her research is supervised by Dr. Rebecca Walker and Prof. Maria Marchetti-Mercer. Beyond academia, Adetola is a mother of three, navigating the delicate balance of parenting and research. She is currently based in Johannesburg where she is deeply engaged in concluding her research proposal and ethics clearance application, shaping a study that will contribute to current academic discussions on displacement.
