Deportations from South Africa set to triple, minister says

By Carien du Plessis, The Africa Report

Deportations of undocumented non-nationals from South Africa to neighbouring countries like Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique are set to increase more than threefold from the 22,436 deportees in the 2022/23 financial year, the Ministry of Home Affairs says.

More than a month after The Africa Report requested the deportation figures, Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber, through his spokesperson Duwayne Esau, confirmed that deportations have more than tripled from May to August this year. Esau did not have up-to-date figures that included September and October, earlier saying that many records are handwritten and take time to collate.

“Keeping track of deportations should be easy,” says Professor Loren Landau, a senior researcher at the University of the Witwatersrand’s African Centre for Migration and Society.
