Researcher (3 year Fixed-Term Post)
The African Centre for Migration & Society (ACMS) invites suitably qualified candidates to apply for the position of Researcher.

This new three-year position provides opportunities for an emerging researcher to build their research profile and postgraduate teaching portfolio within an established, interdisciplinary research centre. The successful candidate will be expected to develop their own research as well as participating in collaborative approaches with other members of the Centre.

In addition to their research work, the researcher will participate in centre activities and contribute to postgraduate teaching and supervision.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in fundraising and the management of research grants/partnerships, including in the African context, and will bring enthusiasm and creativity to the research portfolio of the Centre.

The ideal candidate will have:
• A PhD in a relevant field (e.g. Political Science; Migration/Forced Migration; International Relations; Sociology; Anthropology; Public Health; Demography and Population Studies, Development Studies, Diversity Studies, Law)
• A minimum of two years experience post-PhD in conducting social research in the field of migration and displacement, including within the African context. Experience of interdisciplinary research will be an advantage.
• A personal research trajectory that will contribute to the mission and vision of ACMS
• Experience of participating in local and international research conferences/seminars/similar
• An emerging publication record in local and international peer-reviewed journals and/or books
• A growing national and international research profile
• Experience in grant writing, project management and reporting
• Experience working with a diverse team
• Interest in contributing to the strategic vision of the centre
• Willingness to travel internationally

The following will be an advantage:
• Experience in regional and/or international research collaborations
• Experience in teaching and supervising at postgraduate level
• In addition to English, fluency in other languages spoken across the African continent, including French and Portuguese.
• Experience in public engagement/outreach activities, including interactions with state and non-state entities
• An NRF Rating.
• Knowledge/previous experience of working with African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) Member Universities.

Job tasks
• Work collaboratively to develop and implement the strategic vision of the ACMS.
• Publish articles in peer-reviewed journal articles.
• Fundraising to support and sustain research activities.
• Participate in teaching and supervision of postgraduate students enrolled in Migration and Displacement (Hons, MA, PhD)
• Contribute to academic citizenship activities such as participation in university committees or coordination of centre activities (such as our seminar series).
• Participate in the academic life of the Centre.

*This is a 3-year grant-funded position. Dependent on performance and successful fundraising, the position may be extended.
