OUTREACH AND ADVOCACY
The Forced Migration Studies Programme is committed to serving the communities in which it works. Recognizing that displacement and humanitariansm affects everyone, we adopt a holistic approach with the aim of helping all peoples to realise their human rights while improving social, physical, and economic security.
Local Government Working Group
Building on a workshop for service providers, advocates, and local government the FMSP hosted in August 2003, we have facilitated the creation of a Johannesburg-based Local Government Working Group on forced migration issues. Bringing together representatives from migrant communities, service providers, academics, and advocates, this forum serves an important coordinating function by providing members an opportunity to brief each other on new legal or policy developments affecting the lives of refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants in the Johannesburg area and to develop strategies for promoting the rights of migrants in Johannesburg.
At the heart of this initiative is a belief that refugees and asylum seekers need not be granted special rights, programmes, or entitlements, but should rather be afforded the opportunities to access services and employment already provided under law. Only by doing this can all of Johannesburg’s residents benefit from the dynamism and skills migrants can potentially contribute. Membership of the group, which meets on a monthly basis, is open to all parties working in the field. If you are interested in participating, please contact the FMSP.
Community Outreach
The FMSP organizes a series of activities, many involving students, throughout the community. In addition to making significant contributions to the national ‘Roll Bank Xenophobia Campaign,’ staff regularly conduct interviews with the media and lend their expertise to workshops and courses throughout Southern Africa.
