The African Centre for Migration & Society (ACMS) at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, is an interdisciplinary and internationally engaged Africa-based centre of excellence for research and teaching on migration, displacement, and social transformation. Now celebrating its 20th year, the ACMS is looking to appoint an internationally recognised migration scholar to become part of the centre’s leadership team. The appointment will be made at Prof/Assoc. Prof level, and requires a candidate with extensive experience in academic scholarship and post-graduate supervision, institutional development (including fundraising), project management, and the translation of academic research into popular media and policy processes.
With a focus on the southern African region, the appointee will bring to the ACMS internationally-recognised experience in research, involvement in policy making processes and agenda-setting, and in engagement activities with multiple audiences within and beyond the academy. A track-record in postgraduate teaching and supervision, curriculum development, and the mentoring of early career researchers is critical.
As the appointee may be expected to also serve as a Director of ACMS, this post requires an individual who can lead and strengthen the implementation of the ACMS’ institutional, strategic and academic vision. Critically, this requires an academic willing to invest time and energy in the continued growth of the Centre, including engagement across the University to forge new partnerships across disciplines; a focus on fundraising to ensure the sustainability of the ACMS; and support the development of postgraduate and early career researchers. This requires dedicating time to the extensive administrative and leadership duties involved in this position.
